Right now my Angel is cannon to early season 4. So he spent the summer submerged, Wesley rescued him, Connor is outcast from the hotel. I was going with a time frame before Cordelia's return and the trip to Vegas to rescue Lorne.

Angel is in Sunnydale because he followed Winifred and Lorne there. He remains in the dark as to why Fred and Wes are in Sunnydale.

My preference for Angel and Cordelia is for them to remain friends. I'd like to drop the romantic connotations of their relationship.

"I never pegged you as a coward, Angel. " he called after the vampire, not raising his voice. After all, why have supernatural hearing and not use it? “And yet here you are, running away again. Are you afraid I might accept the apology? Or refuse it?”

Funny, I thought Wesley knew me better than that.

His words stopped me in my tracks, halting my retreat as they were no doubt intended. Wes has always been handy with the verbal barb, especially when it’s at someone else’s expense. But he’s right. Right and wrong.

I am a coward.

I spent a century leading an existing of useless solitude when I could have been helping people, too scared of what I am being discovered to take the risk. Who knows how many thousands of people I could have saved these last hundred years?

I ran from Buffy rather than attempt to work past our differences, and when Doyle died it nearly destroyed me. I very nearly fired Cordelia in the days following, almost didn’t offer doughnuts to the hungry pup that showed up at our door, so desperately needing a handout.

After the debacle with Darla last year, again I tried to shove everyone out of my life. Thankfully, I learnt a painful lesson, and came to my senses before it was too late. Because of that I reordered my priorities, and have made the conscious decision ever since to guard against that part of my nature. Just as I guard against so much of who I am at heart.

This time, though, Wesley is wrong. I have no intention of running. My emotions are raw, and I need to be sure that the remaining bitterness and mistrust don’t slip out into the open where he can see him. Wesley will take them as ample evidence of the impossible and futile nature of reconciliation. The father who used to lock that boy in the closet has done a real number on him. That boy makes Wes like a wounded animal.

This isn’t going to be easy, but if I can make it work, then it’ll be worthwhile.

I stop and keep my back turned, hoping that Winifred will say something to break down his barriers. She may be the only one who can reach him.
